Wearable tech is all the rage these days and everybody and their brother seems to own a Fitbit or some fitness gadget or another that supposedly helps with weight loss.

In fact, millions of these wearable tech gadgets have been sold. Yet, obesity rates are still skyrocketing. Even with advanced technology at their disposal, many people still remain overweight or obese.

To add insult to the injury, most people who do buy these gadgets still remain stuck with their excess pounds and feel disappointed that the gadgets let them down.

Why is this so?

The answer quite simply is… the wearable tech only works if you work it. You’re probably wondering, “What does that even mean?”
Let’s look at why wearable tech doesn’t guarantee weight loss… and why it’s almost always the person’s fault and not the tech.

* Not tracking their food intake

You can have the best activity trackers on the planet but the key rule to losing weight is to be at a caloric deficit. The common belief is that if one takes 10,000 steps a day, they’ve gotten enough activity and will be in calorie burning mode.

While this is true, you must understand that if you consume more calories than you burned taking those ten thousand steps, you will gain weight. You must expend more calories than you consume.

You should always track your food intake and there are apps to help you do this. Currently, progress is being made to create wearable tech that will automatically track your food and calorie intake… but until then, you’ll need to do it manually.

* Used as a fashion statement

As strange as it may sound, many people buy wearable tech to look cool and fit in with the trend. The hard truth is that losing weight and getting fit is a sweaty and tiring affair.

Buying wearable tech alone will not give you the body of a Greek God. You really need to work the tech. You have a cool gadget that has an accurate optical heart rate sensor? Excellent… now train at your VO2 max and get your body into fat burning mode.

This can only be done with hard and consistent exercise. There just no escaping the sweat equity required.

* Not getting enough sleep

Tracking your activity alone is not enough. You must also get sufficient sleep. If you try burning the candle at both ends, you will end up stressed out and body will release the stress hormone cortisol. This hormone indirectly causes you to eat more and store more fat.

Losing weight is more than just exercise. You need to track your food and also your sleep.

* Intensity is a very important factor

Many people who buy fitness trackers that track the number of steps they take often forget about intensity. They are pleased if they meet the 10,000 steps a day mark. While this is good, there is another factor involved that plays a key role in speeding up your weight loss.

That factor is intensity. Taking 10,000 steps over 45 minutes will boost your metabolic rate and put your body in fat burning mode for hours. Taking the same 10,000 steps over the course of the entire day will not have such an effect.

It will still burn calories. Just not as much. So, you must pay attention to intensity too.

To sum it up, wearable tech is a wonderful tool to help you focus your efforts and track important stats like your heart rate, sleep patterns and much more. But you must be aware of how to get the best use out of them and you must stay focused on your weight loss goal.

Wearable tech is like a vehicle to get you to your weight loss goal… but here’s the catch. You are the engine. You have to do the work for you to reach your destination.
